Marie Raperto, The Hiring HubDenied a raise?  It happens and there can be several reasons for it.  It could be due to the economy, something happening within the company or how you are viewed.Just don't give up.  Whatever the reason for the negative response, it can be fixed.Here's what to do next:

1.  Find out why you didn't get the raise.  You have a right to ask and, if your reviews have been positive, you should be told why you didn't get it.  There may be specific criteria within your firm for raises so find out now and work towards that goal.
2. Make a plan.  Meet with your supervisor to develop a plan so you can move ahead.  Do you need more skills training, leadership training?  Determine the issues and what will help you reach your financial goal.
3. Treat this as you would an annual review.  Go over your plan with your supervisor at regular intervals.  Discover if you are now eligible for a raise or what else you need to do to get there.
4. Every company goes through some hard financial times.  If this was the reason they couldn't give you a raise, maybe getting a half-day Friday would work for you.  Figure out what you want and ask for it.  Just remember that it could impact your next raise as well.  So if you go this route, position it as a temporary fix until you can get a raise.

If you've done everything you can and still not getting a raise, it might be time to find a new job.  A new industry might offer more growth or a larger/smaller company could offer different opportunities.  It's your career!
