Discovering the Hidden History of Public Relations

Women have played a far greater role in the early development of the public relations field than previously recognized. In looking into the profession’s past, we have uncovered impressive writings done over the past century–writings which we are digitizing as part of our digitization project, an effort inspired by requests to organize artifacts meaningful to their profession in a searchable online database.Doris Fleischman, wife and business partner of Edward Bernays, was a pioneering professional woman in PR and one of the first American women serving as a professional in business. Many of her writings concerned the role of women in the business world at a time when most women were housewives or worked as secretaries. An active feminist, Fleischman was the first-ever American woman to insist on using her maiden name on her passport. Please support our Digitization Project in any way you can so that the writings of Doris Fleischman Bernays can be preserved and not lost to history.
