What is March United for Public Schools?
It’s a school spirit parade with over 100 schools invited to march with their cheerleaders, marching bands and athletes in uniform. It’s a walk-a-thon with companies from around city engaging employees to form fundraising teams. And it’s concerned New Yorkers marching to show their support for teachers and students. It starts at Foley Square, Manhattan, crosses the Brooklyn Bridge and concludes with a fun-filled family festival at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
Since 2010 New York State has cut the public school budget 4 times! And there are at risk children in New York City that desperately need our help.
1 in 300 Americans are currently enrolled in a NYC public school – that’s a total of 1.1 million children comprising the largest school district in the country. Our schools are under increasing pressure at a time when 60% of third graders are not reading at grade level and 12% of NYC public school students are homeless at some point during the school year.
The good news is the United Way of New York City is making a difference in the lives of the city’s most vulnerable students and their families. Its programming has been such a success that money raised will help expand the programs to help even more children.
If you want to march and attend the family festival please email: MarchUnited@UWNYC.org or go to www.MarchUnited.org for more information.
All money raised is a 501c3 charitable donation to the United Way of New York City supporting its work the NYC Department of Education.
