Ready For A Career Change? 4 First Steps

Marie Raperto, The Hiring Hub

Ready to change your career?

Trying to move into a new area is very difficult.  The best way to attempt this is to freelance in the area first.Freelance positions, even on an occasional basis, can make a career change easier and can help you decide if this is really what you want.

  • Look for freelance jobs online on sites like FlexJobs, in local and industry publications etc.
  • It can take a while to establish yourself in a new field and you want to make sure it's something you really want to do so keep your day job while trying to freelance.  Look for opportunities where you can work from home in the evenings or on weekends.
  • You can try something without too much risk.  Your purpose is to enter a new field so it might not be the best job or pay the most but, if it gives you experience, it's probably worth it.  Love it but can't pay the bills doing it, you can just keep freelancing on the side.
  • As with any job search, NETWORK.  You can get the word out about what you want, what you are doing and find out about the industry.
