The Secret to Retaining and Energizing Your Best People
Leaders are frustrated. They are losing some of their best people…and the majority of the people they are losing are women. Why should organizations care about losing women? There’s one very good reason which is explained by significant research released by McKinsey and Company and other organizations. Studies continue to report that organizations with a greater share of women in leadership and management roles are the most profitable and successful. Year after year, women continue to be underrepresented in management positions in most industries as verified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released this past year (March 2023).
McKinsey & Company say one way to solve this problem is for organizations to show women a commitment to their success by investing in their leadership training and development. Organizations should be regularly providing women managers and high potentials external leadership training specifically designed for them. All things are not equal. It’s a fact that women have unique challenges, which is why leadership training designed for women addresses those internal and external barriers. Training and learning and development officers who offer and recommend this opportunity to women will be rewarded by retention and a reenergized workforce.
The most effective training and development programs for women are those created by organizations that truly understand and acknowledge women’s unique challenges. One established program, now in its sixth year, with positive results for women leaders is the Executive Women’s Leadership Program presented online by the Center for Excellence in Public Leadership at The George Washington University. It is presented by senior fellow Leslie Grossman a women’s leadership thought leader, author, speaker and faculty director of the program, and featuring leading guest experts.
This executive women’s leadership program is unique in that it addresses leadership training from a female perspective. It not only focuses on learning critical leadership skills, but also addresses the internal barriers that so often hold women back from taking on roles for which they are well qualified.
The program addresses core leadership skills: vision, effective communication, executive presence, mindset, relationship building and confidence, as well as new skills that managers and leaders require in today’s hybrid and remote workplace. This includes leading remote and hybrid teams; integrating work and personal life; collaboration, delegation and accountability for remote teams; and creating a career pathway.
