Why 2025 Will Be the Year Communications Professionals Change the World Forever

As we start 2025, a powerful anthem for our times is found in David Byrne’s version of the iconic David Bowie song Heroes. Inspired by a moment in history – Bowie’s music producer and a girlfriend kissing against the Berlin Wall in 1977 – it speaks to the transformative power of love, unity, and shared ideals. The lyrics, “We can be heroes, we can be heroes forever and ever,” remind us that heroism is within reach. The holidays, a time when we often feel connected despite our divisions, offer us the perfect opportunity to reflect on how we can move toward the light of shared American values like equality, freedom, and democracy.

Elections divide us. The holiday season, however, has the unique ability to unite us. Music, too, serves as a bridge, connecting us to each other in ways that words alone sometimes cannot. These values, foundational to our identity as a nation, will guide us in 2025. They will inspire us to do what is right—not only for ourselves, our families, and friends but also for our companies, industries, and communities. Our actions will define us, just as our values do.

The song is poignant a call to action, a challenge to each of us to step up and be heroes in our own right. In the world of communications, this means stepping into a role where we advocate for truth, foster understanding, and elevate voices that matter. It’s about using our platforms to forge connections, just as music connects us, to move us toward a future where democracy and unity reign.

Being a hero for one day starts with doing what is right. Every act of communication that seeks to bring people together, bridge divides, and champion core values contributes to the greater good. This is the foundation for being a hero all year long.

As this year draws to a close, I encourage you, my fellow communicators, to think about the legacy we wish to build. We have the power to shape narratives, create movements, and bring people together. 2025 offers a fresh start. Let us rise to the occasion, guided by the same spirit that drives us during the holidays—the spirit of unity, equality, and freedom.
